WELCOME TO
HMD North Somerset

ABOUT US

The purpose of HMD North Somerset (HMDNS) is to encourage others to learn from the past and work towards a better future by promoting a society free from identity-based hostility and persecution.

HMDNS aims to educate and support individuals, organisations and communities in
North Somerset to commemorate and increase knowledge of the Holocaust, Nazi
persecution and subsequent genocides illustrated by the experience of people who
were affected.

The core purpose of HMDNS is to remember the six million Jewish men, women and children murdered during the Holocaust.  We also learn and commemorate how hatred and prejudice led to genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.  In recent years, UN Human Rights investigators have highlighted that the Yazidi people, Rohingya Muslims, Uyghur Muslims and Palestinians in Gaza suffered appalling abuse which have the hallmarks of genocide.  Our commemorations challenge all manifestations of antisemitism, islamophobia and all forms of prejudice and hatred towards those perceived as being different.

The HMDNS Steering Group comprises volunteers from various sections of the community in addition to representatives from several North Somerset public bodies and Voluntary Action North Somerset.   Representatives include members of various faiths and world views, ethnicity groups, ages and genders.   Interested allies, supporters and sponsors are welcomed and invited to make contact.

HMDNS organises Holocaust Memorial Day events across North Somerset, photography competitions for school pupils, photography exhibitions and gives talks in schools.
