Portishead Holocaust Memorial Day
Portishead Youth Centre
24 January 2019
Peninah Achieng-Kindberg
Having held a successful art competition, which was shown at Portishead Primary School, we also had an event at the Portishead Youth Club, to mark Holocaust Memorial Day.
We were fortunate to have some great music and a really interesting speaker.
Our very own Rosie Thayer introduced the well attended event which had a focus on Rwanda, and acted as compere for the evening.
Wendy Sergeant, brought one of her choirs to sing relevant songs, and joy and passion to the evening. The choir sang beautifully, as all of Wendy's choirs do.
A well known local folk singer from Pill, Wendy Martineau, entertained us with some of her songs, including one about Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe - a beautiful song which was very moving.
The main speaker was Peninah Achieng-Kindberg, who, at the time, was chair of the twinning between Bristol and Beira, and a senior financial official in the Ministry of Justice. Peninah had been to Rwanda for six weeks to study the aftermath of the genocide in that country.
A light buffet was provided afterwards and it was a thoughtful and enjoyable evening.
